Laura Combs, Elementary

Laura is our lead elementary tutor. She is our most requested tutor, which leaves her with very limited availability. Laura wanted to become a tutor so that she could work with students in a one-on-one or small group setting. This allows her to customize lessons based on the needs of her students. What she enjoys most about High Country Academy is the close relationship formed with students and parents. Laura holds a Masters in Education from Tusculum College, was a NC Teaching Fellow, and has 10 years experience in Watauga County classrooms.

Natasha graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Elementary Education and currently teaches middle school math at Valle Crucis School. She takes time out of her busy schedule to tutor because she wants to be able to reach more students and make more of a difference. She says that being a tutor gives her the opportunity to make one-on-one connections with students, which is priceless. To her, it is all about that “light bulb” moment when students make connections.

Meet Dan, our lead high school math and science tutor. Dan was originally a businessman who began his teaching career through SAT classes. SAT tutoring led to tutoring in calculus, physics, chemistry, and other subjects. Dan found that he really enjoyed explaining the subject matter to students. Dan holds a graduate degree in Law from Rutgers and has over ten years experience tutoring students.

susan Chandler, elementary

Susan is a retired teacher with 31 years experience in the North Carolina Public School System.  The last 19 years of her teaching experience were spent teaching 3rd and 4th grade students at Parkway School here in Watauga County.  She attended UNC-Chapel Hill and UNC-Wilmington with a degree in Recreation Administration and teaching certification in Elementary Education.  She's missed working with students during her retirement, and has found tutoring to be the perfect solution. Helping students reach their potential as successful readers and mathematicians is her passion.

Debbie is a high country local with 27 years experience as a classroom teacher in public education, and has worked at Hardin Park and Cove Creek Schools. She believes middle schoolers should have a strong foundation for high school and they should dream big. Debbie has served as the Watauga County Association of Educators President and North Carolina Association of Educators District President.  Debbie holds a Masters in Education from Appalachian State University.

Ali Pack, Elementary

Ali comes to us from Two Rivers Community School where she taught 2nd and 3rd grade. She believes that all students have a right to an educational environment where learning is accessible and enjoyable. Ali values one-on-one time with students as it makes them more successful as they return to their classrooms. She holds a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Radford University and holds a teaching certificate in Elementary Education.
